Alright, we gotta set some vocabulary straight. Spring clip = butterfly clip that comes with each new set of pads. Retainer clip = clip that sits at the top of the caliper.

The retainer clip (bottom right in pic below) is the one I pulled out today & bent in...it wasn't fitting snug around the extensions on the pad (the Juicy 3 retainers don't have that barb like the ones you showed). They look like this:


And they curve around the two extensions at the top of the pads (bottom in this pic):



So that may be enough to keep the pads in without the protrusion on the piston...I'm going to give it a try before spending money on new brakes or a rebuild kit.
