I had the same experience years ago, and was quite surprised when I switched to modern rechargables. The lack of massive self-discharge is a huge step forward.
On a side note, are you familiar with the Maha 9000 charger? It's for AA/AAA and lets the user select the current input, amongst many other things. It's a great little charger for properly charging cells and extending their life.
