I commute on a '92 Cannondale touring bike. In 1000 miles, I'd expect to clean and lube the chain once unless I got caught in wet conditions a few times. Otherwise, pedals last forever, current shifters have lasted 43,000 miles, brake pads go forever, major bearings need attention either never, or 5-10k range.
