How to make mt bike more comfortable for long road rides/touring?
My mt bike just isn't as comfortable for longer rides as is my road bike. Plainly put, after about 30 miles or so of riding, my butt hurts.....a lot. I've done several long distance rides on my road bike (Ragbrai twice and across my home state, Arkansas, this year), without (too much) pain.
I'm thinking about doing a camping tour next year, in which case I'll need to ride the mt bike. I'm wondering what I can do to make the mt bike more comfortable? I've probably had 3 or 4 different saddles on it, now I have a Brooks saddle. I've raised the seat, lowered it, tipped it up, tipped it back, moved it forward, moved it back, nothing seems to really help.
Just wondering if the more up-right riding position could be part of the problem. Would it be worth the money to have some sort of extension put on my stem, to stretch me out a bit, thus taking more of the weight off the saddle?
I'm not an off-road rider. We live in a rural area with lots of dirt roads. That's the reason I have a mt bike, for riding the back roads.
