Bikes: A slate grey mountain bike & a grey road bike

People have always been so nice! Asking about our trip, if we need water or food, letting us shelter in the rain, giving directions. To me, that is one of the best things about touring.

Back in ’05, a friend of mine rode the Continental Divide trail and I rode the first 8 days in Montana with her.

On the very first day as we were heading up the first pass the weather changed from warm & sunny at the bottom, to cloudy, to cloudy & rainy, to rain & sleet. We put our rain gear on and kept going. A pick-up truck came up the road and we pulled over. They stopped, a man & woman, and said they had seen us down in the valley earlier. They were very concerned and offered to drive the bikes & us over the pass. They said we could stay the night at their house if we wanted. We assured them we were fine, and they reluctantly drove away. I was touched by their concern and still can remember the look on the woman’s face, like she hated to drive off w/o us. They probably still wonder what happened to us!

We made some mistakes that first day, like not keeping as dry as we should, but we survived (me writing this is proof!) and learned from our mistakes and went on the have a fabulous rest of the trip, me for just a short time & my friend for the rest of the Divide.
