Historically, wheels used shallow box rims which require closer spoke spacing to prevent rim flex, and were typically 36 spoke. Modern wheels typically have deeper v-shaped rims that are fine with fewer spokes, and 28 rear (2X) with 24 front (radial) is a good setup for most situations.
