You can turn your analogy around to say that if bigger wheels handle bumps better, why not make a 36"? Or a 42"? Or even bigger? There's a sweet spot somewhere, and depending on your riding style, it might be different for each person.
And FWIW, I love 24". I'd also take a $1500 FS 26" over a $1500 29er hardtail, but that's just because it would suit my riding better.
