I did a search, didn't snag anything. So here goes.
It is getting darker out. Period. I am leaving in the dark, and coming back home in the dark, and I be a newbie commuter too(6 to 7 months). This morning I am leaving at about 6am, pitch dark out, and raining. I got a front light, rear light, and yellow rain jacket. I got to do about half mile on a shoulderless single lane road before I get to a double lane road with a center lane.
Let me tell you, it is SCARY. It is a 30 mph on that section of road. The cars are averaging about 50 to 60..I have to wait for a break in the traffic to get on the road, so that means after I am on, here comes the cars on my rear, I can hear them coming. I get the center of the lane because there is no shoulder, and I am not going that route of trying ride on the side, been there, done that.
I survived the morning ride, and the evening ride home in the dark and rain. But, they were scary!!.One would say "why do I do it?".. Well first off, I am as about as timid as they come, and then some. With that said, the reason I do it is because I have gotten addicted to the pump of the ride.

I am going to commute on two wheels anyway I go. On the motorcycle and the bicycle 5 times a week. But, lately I prefer the bicycle, and in bad weather, the bicycle is my choice anyway.
I am thinking about callling my local police and tell them that I am being passed on the double yellow by cars and they are not giving me my 3 feet. In my last 5 commutes, at least 3 times cars have passed me in that half mile section crossing the double yellow and almost head on crash into the car on the other lane. Sooner or later it is going to happen. And when they have the choice of running me off the road to avoid a head on, I am going to be their choice each time.
Also, I am going to suggest that big signs be put along that section of road alerting cars that bicycles are on the road too. Didn't mean to run it, but like I said, that was some scary chit today, and I had to vent it out...
