The neighbors's opinions don't usually count for much. On small lots like the one in question, one can usually build to 30-35 feet with no solar access restrictions (your shadow doesn't matter). It looks like a high-energy using eyesore to me. I'm glad it isn't next door to me, especially if they are really going to use those fireplaces. It makes my throat hurt to think about it.
