You need mileage? Run around the block.
Roads crowded and you're not gonna be able to bike? Run on the side walk.
Going for a vacation and can't figure out where to pack your bike? Pack your running shoes instead.
Wanna look less spandexy? Running clothes are less form fitting.(this is completely up for debate)
No room in the garage to hang/park your bike? only need a shoe box for running gear.
I always felt good after a run. Cycling though I feel like I've been on the bike. Seen more of the world than I would have on a run. They're equally as much fun as the other. I don't understand the love/hate between the two.
Actually, having lived in the tri world for awhile now and being a pretty solid pure marathon runner in the past, I can say with confidence that there's much less "I hate cycling" from the running crowd than vice-versa. Runners aren't exactly flocking to cycling, I think for many of the reasons you've listed above including cost and convenience, but there aren't too many who complain about it when they try it. Cyclists on the other hand, have a large proportion of whom are in the "hate running" crowd and avoid it at all costs. I can understand this as well though - running for cyclists can be painful (due to the pounding) and slow, whereas cycling for runners is just slow and not really painful.
