Yeah, I think it's a good deal. I might even be satisfied with the cyclocross crankset it's got (or, if needed, I have an extra 50/34 compact that I could put on there). The most comparable bike from, for example, Specialized (Tricross Elite with Apex and discs) retails for over $1600; there's also a couple Jamis steel bikes with drops and discs for between $300-600 more than the Fantom.
Simply put, it's a really good deal for what you get. Remember that it'll arrive disassembled in a box to the same extent that other bikes arrive at bike shops, so you get to learn it inside-and-out when you put it together.
