Since I don't have a birth certificate, but a form s240 from the state department (report of a citizen birth overseas) I really, really hate these "show your birth certificate" laws. They always lead to weeks of total confusion on the part of whatever agency I'm applying to. I now just shrug when I'm told it's not a legal document, and tell them to call the state department, who will tell them otherwise. Usually they do that, get told it's legal proof of birth and citizenship, and then proceed to argue with me about producing my (nonexistent) birth certificate instead.
