I started out with the iPhone 3Gs and this setup on my touring bike. The mounting bracket was homemade and the intent of the design was to put the phone in clear view and useable and dampen any vibrations. The case was just a cheap molded rubber case. The front pocket of the bar bag houses the DIY charger system I use. As mentioned above the phone running a moving GPS tracking app and with screen display on will drain the battery fast. When I tour I black out the screen until I need to see it watching the app mapping can be distracting and all you have to do to wake it is tap the screen. I use the cyclemeter app. My new phone is an iPhone 4 and with it I bought the otterbox case that comes with the belt clip the case is much better and much easier to clip off when I leave the bike. I haven’t taken any pics of the new setup but will try and get some. I do have one of the attachment bracket and you can see how a belt clip would snap to it.
I have been riding like this for a couple years now and no bad reports. If it is raining I put the phone in the bar bag if it’s looking like rain or misty I slip the phone in a baggie and clip it on. I do take calls while riding using the speaker mode and only when I’m at a point where the talking isn’t going to be a distraction. I was riding with my niece on the MUP a few months ago and her husband was trying to call her and couldn’t get her so he called me and I rode up beside her and said it’s for you and had him on speaker. She was so impressed after seeing the printout of our ride and being able to talk to him she went out and got an iPhone.
The charging system I built was built as an option for long distance touring where you might not have access to AC charging for many days at a time. For commuters a good solution might be the case I use daily it’s called a mophie juice box case. I have been using it daily now for about a month and it more than doubles a full charge on the phone. That would be more than enough for a daily use and commuting running a cycle app.
