I tend to agree that there is a lot more lip service given to "wanting to" cycle instead of drive. It seems like people go through a period when they discover cycling as an alternative that they think the answer is simply if we were like the Netherlands 50 percent of our nation would cycle. I think Portland would disprove this idea because they do have the infrastructure and yet after all of these years 94 percent of the population hasn't joined them. My view might be slanted because of my experences.
I think if we are utilitarian bicyclists in most of the USA we may as well face the fact that we will remain in the minority and we better keep our traffic skills honed - - There is no true cycling infrastructure coming. Nobody but us cares about cycling, and as a solution it will only be a solution for you and I.
Here we may be even more in agreement. We have the additional problem of differing goals between differing cyclists. Many commuters could care less about shopping by bike. Recreational cyclists may or may not be in agreement with cycling as alternate transportation. Long distance cyclists seem to manage very well with infrastructure we have.
I love riding. I feel better, I am almost 60 and my bloodwork is wonderful, I have no chronic disease, I take no prescribed medications. I breathe easily, I climb stairs effortlessly, I can keep up with the grandchildren. I'm always in a good mood, and I love the feelings when I'm riding - the sounds, the smells, the occasional wave from/to a fellow rider. I am clearly healthier than anyone I know that is my age.
I don't know if I am healthier than anyone I know but I do love riding by bicycles and my blood work is better than average for my age as well. I enjoy talking to other cyclist out on the road and hearing stories about trips taken from Seattle to San Diego and Palm Springs to Phoenix. Distances I find facinating.
one of my peers - says this: "Don't you know how dangerous riding a bicycle is?" I can only turn and stare. I have nothing to say. And the sad thing is I know there is no logic that would convince them that they are the ones taking the dangerous course. I don't know how to fix it.
I get that all the time from healthy people as well. But I keep thinking how running and jogging took off before anyone even built running and jogging paths. I can only hope that people can see they don't need to wait for a political solution or for America to build a giant Netherlands before they can toss a leg over the top tube, of if they perfer step through and head out to see what their communities have to offer. There is nothing to fear but fear itself a great man once said.
