Try crumpled alminum foil rubbed in the direction of the brush pattern on the plates(I use a little bit of WD40 and it works well with the crumpled aluminum..
Try to do it in a small area first and of course you need to be careful not to hit the paited areas, but you can always repiant those if you damage the paint by accident.
