Go and get a credit card from a credit union. Use it for your groceries etc that you normally buy, pay off the card every month. And even better, one month, only pay of the minimum and then next month pay off the balance, just so it shows you keeping a balance. Seems silly, but it could save you thousands of dollars trying to get a loan without a good credit rating. Talk with your credit union rep about building your credit rating. Don't worry, I don't think you'll be tempted to go out and buy that gold-plated Madone, just because you have credit.

If you can scrounge enough money for a sizable down payment, you'll probably also do a little better on rates. (I'm just guessing here... but seems logical.)
