Possible you can test out your current fitness (and equipment performance) through couple quality group rides before comitting to buy a new bike?
Case 1 - If you can stay with or even outperform the big boys => no need to spend couple thousands for a new bike to make only marginal improvements.
Case 2 - If you are not fit at all and get drop right away => simply do more training with your current bike and get the most workouts out of it. In parallel continue to save up money until you decide upgrading is a must.
What is your current bike? A 06 Scattante with decent componentry? Shouldn't be too shabby right? Give it some love by tuning the drivetrain, adjusting your riding position, dressing it up with new saddle, new bartape...etc. This may clench your thirst to buy new.
