As far as being able to clearly see what is behind me, I still always look before pulling across traffic. The mirror is great for increased situational awareness, but not good enough that I'd trust my life to it. Same reason I always look before changing lanes in a car, just to make sure. A mirror is good for telling you it's not clear, but I don't trust them to say it's clear (if that makes sense).
Yes that does make sense. it's to increase your awareness, as you say. Personally, if i'm on a stretch of road that has little or no shoulder, i'd like to know if an 18-wheeler is coming up behind me.
