I haven't had a TV since I was 18, and use the computer sparingly outside of work. I spend 1 to 1.5 hours a day on the bike on week days, which includes commuting to/from work pretty often, and around 4 on weekends. That comes to around 15 hours of saddle time per week; the average American spends about 35 hours a week in front of the TV, like it's almost a full-time job.

Last week, early into one of my regular rides, I heard my name, and wound up chatting with this lady in a car who I vaguely recognized, but couldn't place. She was shocked to see me, asked if I'd biked "all the way" from my neighborhood, a whopping ten miles. The next morning she was behind the counter at the coffee shop, and when I came in she told me how inspiring it was to see a person on a bike, going so far. When I told her where I wound up and how I got home, which came to almost 50 miles, she told me she'd like to get her bike out, but that she'd never be able to ride anywhere near that far, and anyway, "how do you find the time?"
