Does the Garmin have to wait for practical reasons or financial reasons?

If it's financial you can get some reasonable used units and you can download maps for free (and I'm talking about legal maps, not dodgy ripped off and hacked maps). You can download Garmin's BaseCamp software for free as well. The latest and greatest do all sorts of cool things but if all you need is a track log so you can see where you've been you don't need the top-end stuff.

From what you're saying it sounds like if you get the food balance right the weight should just fall off you. I eat less junk than I used to but still find the snacks can be appealing even when I know how much effort it takes to burn them off again. It's also a bit of a shock when I look at some of my favourite meals thinking they are quite healthy only to realise that actually they contain far more calories and fat than I'd thought.

That said I don't know I'd want to look at food purely as energy. Eating things we enjoy in moderation is the key - finding the balance between food serving a physiological need and nothing more, and being a primary source of pleasure.
