You are probably right that he could get plenty of miles out of a lighter build. But if he isn't going out racing and just wants a smooth rolling wheel that he doesn't have to think about or baby in any way then I think these will do it. I have an older set of CXP12/DA 7700 hubs/DB14 spokes laced 3x that I use for flat solo rides and centuries that I don't think I've ever trued. They must weigh close to 2000gms but if I had to pair down to one set I think they are the ones I'd keep.
