I have had to wait for another bus several times when using my bike combined with the bus. One Saturday I had to wait as one after another bus went by with full racks. I am hoping that there is some solution that allows more bikes to be carried on the buses because we need it here in Los Angeles. The number of cyclists here has grown enormously over the last few years, and given the span of the city and the lack of viable commuting routes, a combination of transportation modes is often the only feasible way to travel car free.
This is exactly my point about a solution that doesn't scale very well. It works OK when transportation cycling is at a particular level... like my city... but it is almost guaranteed to move past that and be pretty useless.
However, there are some solutions to this problem you describe and I'd probably be right there if I were you. 1) Ride a beater to the subway and lock it up with a couple of u locks. 2) buy a folder.
