I was very happy with 3 rings and 8 cogs in the form of 50-40-30 x 13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21. Nice tight cogs for plains rides east of Boulder, CO but with plenty of low end for the mountains west without a lot of double shifting. 52/42/30 was also an option providing a little more range in two bigger rings.
Campagnolo and the other manufacturers weren't too happy with the 11 cassettes needed to keep enough people happy (11-18, 11-21, 11-26, 12-19, 12-21, 12-23, 12-25, 13-21, 13-23, 13-26, and 14-26), two lines of front derailleurs, and two rear derailler sizes (three at the triples' zenith)
Enter 11 in back, which are enough for both parties. I can match the range, spacing, and small ring range I had in the 8 speed era and Campagnolo gets by with just 5 cassette combinations, one front derailleur shape, and one rear derailleur length.
OTOH, if they're going to force an 11T starting cog and 110mm BCD I'm not going to be content with less than a dozen in back so my gearing options remain as good as they were over 15 years ago.
