A small amount of thread lock wouldn't hurt in my view. Shimano bottom bracket cups come from the factory with a small amount of thread lock already applied so you won't need any if you are installing a new Shimano BB? Just use the low strength stuff and don't use too much if you're going to try it. Also, thread lock will not work if the threads are oily so keep this in mind.
