Chain links too close together? (lengthwise)

I have an old 1985 Peugeot road bike that I believe has the original Sedis chain on it. I changed wheels a while back, and the chain began skipping badly. This is a friction shift bike so as long as you're in a gear and not chattering, there should be no skipping going on. Any time I put a load on it now the chain will jump. Here is the kicker though?? I put a chain checker on it figuring the chain or cogs were bad, even though the wheel didn't skip on another bike. Well, I couldn't even get the checker into the chain without forcing it?

Is it possible that the chain is so worn that the checker will not fit, because the proper link is out of range of the pin placement? Surely if it was that bad it would skip with any cassette period. Even the one that was on it previously, with another set of wheels. But, no sikipping at all until I put this wheelset on the bike. Two previous sets didn't skip. Weirdness.,,,,BD
