Just picked up a 2008 Canondale Adventure 1000, hybrid, for a mere sum of $150.00, it's set up to be my, "utility/back up" bike. It's got a really weird drive train, Sram Direct Drive with a 9 speed cassette so in theory it's got 27 speeds. A "head shock", fork and it should be FUN on the local, dirt parts of the Pikes Peak Greenway!
I've got a 9 speed cassette, too. Out of the 27 available speeds, I use maybe 5 of them, all from the middle crank up front. The small one is too torquey unless I'm mountain biking with it and the large one is far too tall. I can hit 30 mph on flat ground in 7 and 2; I don't see the need for the large crank.
