I remember back in the early 00s I was working at5 a shop that sold Specialized and we had a couple of 'Crossroads Elite' bikes with (I think) Xt derailleurs, a lightweight, short travel susp. fork and an aggressive layout for performance riding. Some of the bike snobs at the shop were saying 'wtf is that??!!!?" and "Who would buy a $1200
hybrid??!!?" as if it was painful for a 'true cyclist' to say the word hybrid. Those bikes were sold out faster than any other we had on the floor, I think, and have probably accounted for more miles of riding than most of the $3000 road bikes sold that year.
