Yes, thanks for the advice. I think you saw my post before I edited it. I am going to clear-coat after the primer now. I'm going to stick with the primer, not everbrite, because I already bought it for one thing! getting all the paint off has been a huge job so far, but I should finish today.

Also, I finally found out what kind of bike it was! I knew it was a Vitus, but now I'm pretty certain it's a Futural model because it has the wishbone seat-stays. I sent the company an email, I'm trying to find out what year it's from.
