Mostly compatible. Most MTB shoes have a small 4 bolt p[attern to accomodate SPD style pedals. Most Road shoes have a 3 bolt pattern to accomodate most road cleat systems. Specialized low-mid range road shoes have both small, 4 bolt pattern and the 3 bolt pattern. Sidi now has shoes with a large 4 bolt pattern specifically for Speedplay cleats. Speed playcleats can be used with any 3 bolt shoe as the use an adapter plate to accomodate ther large pattern 4 bolt design. Clear as mud right?
