I have thought of carrying a small hatchet for touring. I do carry a Leatherman Wave, it does have a small saw blade on it. It could take care of something like that small tree.
I thought about it too, but have yet to have a need for it, so it's hard to justify the weight penalty, especially since I can drive my tent stakes with my U-lock. I'm still trying to come up with a reason for one though, because I want to buy a nice one!
