If I need to use the BL to let faster traffic pass, I drive as far right as needed to get comfortable passing as motorist rarely adjust their position when there is a bike lane present. The right 2/3 of bike lanes is often unusable with debris and gutter pan/asphalt crack.
I never understood why so many cyclists complained about close passing until my commute route change (this past late Sept) from no bike lanes on 45mph arterial roads to bike laned 45mph arterial road. Bike lanes cause close passing it seems as motorist only stay just barely to the right of the stripe instead of focusing on the cyclist and giving passing space. Having bike lanes on my daily ride now has changed my feelings about them from indifferent to strong dislike. Its like going from actively part of traffic to invisible.
