Bicycle theft is indeed high in Santa Cruz. Generally speaking, bicycles should always be locked with a good U lock if outdoors, and preferably inside at night. Being in a back yard is not a guarantee of safety at all.

The city used to keep a list of recovered bicycles, but the maintainer I believe retired. You can try calling the police department with details, but it's unlikely you'll get results. Craigslist, ebay, and flea markets are probably the things to check out (including flea markets in the greater Bay Area). But realistically your chances of recovery are low. If I see the thing I'll obviously get back to you.

If she need to replace the bike, the Bicycle Church is a good bet for inexpensive bikes IF she (or you I suppose) are willing to do some mechanical work. She can even earn a free bike by volunteering.

Bummer about the bike, good luck.
Thanks for your help. She did go to the local flea market and we have been looking on craigslist. I think you are correct that the chances of recovery are low. One of her TA's at school did get lucky and got her bike back recently.

She's pretty bummed, she has been diligent to lock w/ a u lock and cable but she let her guard down. With all the bike theft in SC, a decoy bike sting would be nice. All of these thefts could likely be a few people. Not sure how the PD could go about that and I am sure this isn't too high on their priority.

She's been to the bike church quite a bit in the last few years, I'll mention that to her. She has a beater MTB for now, so at least she can get around.

Thanks,
