Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

+1 on taking it to a bike shop to determine exactly what you have. Your comment about the "square opening" is puzzling. Are you looking at the end of the spindle?
