Thanks for all the information.
The other day I took a good close look at the pedals and noticed that the left pedal is broken, meaning there is way too much play - the spring isn't holding the "U" sections at a 90 degree angle but allowing them to move about 2-3 mm. No wonder my cleat was wearing out and kept coming loose from the pedal.
I took the pedals to the shop where I bought the bike (Dec 2004) and they gave me some loaner pedals while mine are at Crank Bros. for repair. Don't know why Crank Bros. can't just replace them?

Anyone else have similar problems with egg beater pedals?
