I'm running the 1056 with 8 speed on my Bob Jackson and it shifts fine. There's a note on VeloBase about the 1050: "This is one of my favorite indexing rear derailleurs for up to 8 speed cassettes (it will probably handle 9 speed too but I only use 6,7, and 8 speed cassettes). They will easily handle a 32T rear sprocket with 48-38T chainrings. The steel pulley cage adds a little weight but the added rigidity makes for smooth shifts. Still, sounds like the fellow runs that 1050 setup on 8sp cassettes...I actually think that this is what I was remembering, and unable to find searching the Forum (bc it's on Velobase), that led me to believe that it shouldn't be any trouble. Thanks for the heads-up!
