My cycling friend and I flew into Anchorage, Alaska several years ago, and were to take the train over to Fairbanks to begin our ride south. While we were riding the considerable distance from the airport to the train station in the rain, many people in cars were hollering and jestering at us as they drove by, heading in the same direction, but because of all the rain and tire noise, we couldn't determine what they were saying. Being in a foreign country, and wearing bright yellow cycling rain jackets with a large black 'Teamsters' emblem on the back, we didn't know if there was a hatred for Unions, or what to expect.....we just politely waved back. When we pushed our bikes into the crowded rail lobby, we were met by a huge crowd of very boisterous and friendly people, all Teamster Union Representatives from across the United States, on their way home from a Convention. You can't imagine how relieved we were, and how many hands we shook.
