Most of the specialty builders and many of the mass volume manufacturers had adopted TIG welding by 1988. Non-standard angles, oversize and ovalized tubing was becoming popular. Big name manufacturers with lugless models in 1988 included Diamondback, Fuji, Miyata, Nishiki, Schwinn, Trek and Univega.
i think you can add Specialized to that list too. my '87 Stumpjumper is welded. wish it wasn't though.
