Going beyond 6 speed you may also have frame spacing issues.
The OP should be alright going to 7 speed since standard 6 speed also uses 126mm spacing. It is after 7 speed where frame spacing may become an issue.
Even at 130mm spacing, many 126mm bikes will take that with little hassle.
