My advice would be to upgrade your wheels as planned, spreading your (I'm assuming steel) frame to fit 130mm.

Decide what you'd eventually like to upgrade to in terms of shifting, and buy the appropriate cassette. Then put aside some cogs (maybe the biggest and second smallest - you have to use the smallest one) and space it to 6spd in the meantime.
