Might just check your local Craigslist, I got a couple pair of wheelsets there at great prices. One set, a 7 speed is running on my old, 79 Schwinn LeTour, friction shifting on the Shimano 400 FF RD. Did have to get a modern, narrower chain, as the old one was skipping a bit. A lot cheeper than a new set. I did try an 8 on it, frame spacing did come into play as an issue, but the RD could still handle the shifting. Good old, heavy chrome job the 400 FF.
