Editing this almost did me in. Now I need a drink.
This stuff has been sitting around my bike room for 30 years ( I'm 50 now ) and I think it belongs in a Bike Museum or Major Bicycle Collection, and not gathering dust here, so here it is for auction. I truly believe that with the technology and advancement in materials over the last 3 decades, that this Great Idea by Inventor Mr. Royce Husted could possibly be brought to light once again and be successful.
The CambioGear by Excel of Franklin Park, Illinois is a Radial Gear Bicycle Transmission that does away with many of the problems of the Slant Parallelogram Derailluer. The idea is an expandable 16 speed (later 15 spd.) chainring on the front, and just a chain tensioner in the rear to take up all the chain slack incurred by the changing dimensions of the radial gear. Very simple and efficient in design, but the Dupont Products of the 80's just weren't up to the job at hand. These prototype CambioGears were brittle and if you got a "Void" in your moulding process, the part would fail under heavy stress. Mr. Husted went home many a night after me and my larger legged friends R & D'd his lastest "Better and Improved Design" into a box of splintered Rynite and Zytel. Don't get me wrong, I devoted 3 years of my life trying to get this idea to production for Excel, but it just wasn't reliable for the long haul like a gruppo of Campagnolo is!
I believe that some kid or engineering student could pick up the pieces 30 years later and maybe w/ some Carbon Fiber Technology or maybe some Teflon Impregnated Titanium could make this idea reliable. Mr. Husted tried twice after abandonment and failed both times, ( Nordic Track Bike & Yankee Bike Co.) due to inferior materials.
This is an actual Genuine Original Design Excel CambioGear Trade Show Bike from the early 1980's. When Excel threw in the towel, abandoned the CambioGear patent and moved Production Operations to China in 1984, being this was my Frejus Racer that I converted, it came home w/ my stuff. A very sad day for America being the last American Manufacturer of Derailluers (until Sram) and the largest bicycle parts manufacturer in America at the time.
This collection consists of an actual Trade Show Bike that did the circuit all over the world in '83/'84 that is as close to production as this project got. The bicycle itself started life as a Frejus Road Racer from the '70s, painted by Fast Eddie Wiesler of the Cyclery North in Chicago for the bike shows.
It has a full Excel / Rino Gruppo, Concor Superleggerra Seat, Cinelli Stem, GB Bar, DT dbl.butted S.S. Spokes, laced 4x to Fiamme Ergal Sew Up Rims w/ Clement Sew Ups (old). and the only thing that isn't original to the show bike is the period Shimano 600 brake set (minus the missing rear brk.)-- it originally had a set of Black Modolo's .
Included are:
-- 4 other complete CambioGears of varying age from super early original design to beyond production.
-- An extra early Drive Plate and Cam Plate, 1 of each, with a little modification would make another complete drive.
-- 21 Drive Planets of varying age, from super early to beyond final production. The Drive Planets are the most likely to fail and good to have a few spares.
-- 8 right hand Idlers and 7 left hand Idlers.
-- 5 spare hardened Axles.
-- 2 complete Cam Plate Brakes w/ spare tension pin spring.
-- 1 Shift Lever and Cable w/ stop.
-- 2 complete Chain Tensioners w/ a bunch of tensioner spares including a 1 of a kind Super Light Cage w/ BullsEyes, I was always trying to keep weight to a minimum.
-- A handful of Failed Drive Planets showing the moulding voids that create cracks.
-- A bunch of printed materials pertaining to the CambioGear Project including many Excel Advertising Flyers and a couple of articles on Royce and his designs.
