I mean I agree with you, it is almost certainly 90% marketing/bling. In my case I was doomed from the start since I needed a carbon seatpost with 32mm of setback and FSA makes the only one I could get. Because of my bike OCD, I then required a matching stem, so...I really had no choice in the matter.
