That said, there were few saints in that thread, and everyone (yours truly included) exhibited the ugliness that sometimes comes with the assumed anonymity of the internet

I think we can all understand why Jancouver snapped that photo in the first place, and i'd bet many of us might also have thought it looked a bit ridiculous. We may even post about it on in a thread where we know everyone and laugh about it, but to start a thread with the expectation that others to sing along with you was uncool.

The slowtwitch crowd, well, let's just say that they much prefer the "eye for an eye" method rather than taking a higher road. Calling someone a dirtbag for snapping a photo, posting it online, and ridicule the person in the photo would be justified, but apparently mob justice demands that the same treatment get imposed on the offender.

The person in that photo is obviously justified to punch back as the slowtwitch thread really came from left field, but decided to take the low road with the line "my son won his AG, what did your son win?" Not that i agree with his repartee, but at first I thought his son won at least a competitive age group, but it turns out to be the under 10 age group, which just reminds me of the kid showing up to a fun race with Lightweight wheels. Of course, the slowtwitch choir brown-noses the preacher and calls the kid the next Sergio Jr, an accomplished time trialist who represented Mexico in the U-19 UCI TT championships in Denmark.

I believe people would have qualms about any sort of the things mentioned above in real life (other than the secret smirks amongst like-minded people) when they have to do things face-to-face, but anonymity (or perceived anonymity) really brings out the worst of people.
Great statement. rkwaki story time.
Years ago I was living in Toronto and someone had combined my information with my roommates and started racking up loan debt and then defaulted on it. This ended up going to a very aggressive collection agency and they eventually got me on the phone. As this was a very aggressive agency the guy called me every name in the book and accused me of being a low life thief etc. I allowed him to go on and on and then stopped him. Here is the conversation:
rkwaki: What company did you say you work for?
d-bag: XYZ Collections
rkwaki: What did you say your name was?
d-bag: Johnny D-Bag
rkwaki: Ok that's great I can see that you are calling from ***-***-**** (telephone number)
d-bag: Yeah what's your point?
rkwaki: As I know the area very well and I know that your telephone number comes from only one building in the area (don't ask how I knew) and as that building is one block from my condo I will be over in five minutes and we can discuss it face to face. I will be the big, mean looking m'ef'er standing at the front door, I will make sure I ask for you personally then we will see if you talk to me like that.
d-bag: click
Never heard from them again.
Everyone is a super hero online.
I am way worse face to face.
