Mtn.Bike Action mag (Aug. '05) had a comparison of Shimano vs. Sram components. Guess they got it right on the SRAM front der. They said "It won't fit on most linkage bikes and even single pivot suspension bikes."
They do seem to like SRAM's rear der's much better than Shimano.
