Whatever a specific culture defines as ethical is ethical for them, and to apply yours to others is foolish, IMHO. Now the US may offer legal protections to its citizen's IP, but that shouldn't apply outside of our territorial holdings, as I don't want any other sovereign land's laws applying to me.
That might have been fine when cultures were largely insular, but we're in an era global trade now, which is subject to international treaties.
