Vinokurov is a Russian name...
Re. pronounciation: It is vino- (like in "In
Vino Veritas", -kur- (like in "
cur-ve) and -ov (like in "
off-side")... Although the 'r' in -kur- is a part of the last syllable '-rov' (vi-no-ku-rov)
Re. RED ARMY post above: Some Slavic languages have separate letters for short and long vowels (i.e. in Czech and Slovak, there is a little sign (similar to English language apostrophe) marked
directly above a vowel: a' is "aa" (or long 'a' like in f
ather), e' is 'ee', etc. (using apostrophe just for illustration purposes))... Even in Russian you have many cases where the same vowels are pronounced short or long (without being marked by apostrophe), depending on a word and a position of a vowel within the word...
PS: As to how do I know it since I don't have fancy username and avatar proclaiming my loyalties... (RED ARMY
), I can speak, read or write in four Slavic languages: Slovak (my mother tounge), Czech, Polish and Russian....
(German and English too, but I don't think it counts in this discussion...
)
