Yeah, parallel curbs can be dicey on a MTB and deadly on a road-bike. But straight on shouldn't be a problem. If you get the front wheel over, the rest of the bike will go, its all up to you how much (if any) your rear wheel takes the hit.

Because of the additional rider weight over the front end, road bikes are way harder up and down curbs than MTBs. But its totally doable.

What I see among adults who ride is that the ones that "get" bunny hops, gentle curb jumps, rubbing wheels, wheelies, track stands, riding no hands, etc... are usually the ones that have BMX backgrounds.

The skills developed as a kid transfer right over and learning them as an adult is hard and painful. There was lots of crashing involved learning how to jump a double, wheelie, etc... and most adults don't have the inclination to do so.
