If you have a smartphone/ ipod with video or a portable video camera, yo may want to fire it up to record video before you go down that path again. If the guy was so hostile to begin with, chances are his anger has escalated at this point & next time you two run into each other, it could be trouble. A video of him attacking you would go a long way towards establishing the facts of the story, shold law enforcement become involved.
