I run two blinking lights. One is mounted to the fork and shines nearly horizontally, giving me a good idea of the terrain. The other is mounted on the handlebar, pointed down so that it illuminates right past the lower light. It gives me pretty good sight of what is my most likely problem, debris or animals.

Ninjas can be a problem, but everyone can see me coming so I am not so much concerned with a head on collision.
