Sounds like he would have been mad no matter what you did, most of the joggers I've seen are either lost in thought and unaware of their surroundings or intent on making others change their behavior to accommodate them. And they all seem to dress in dark colors, which means you need more light to see them.
I wouldn't worry too much about 100 lumens, that's not much light for most commuters after dark.
